Reflective Narrative:
I believe that JAPN 320S help contributed to the fulfillment of MLOS 1 and 2. Since this class is an upper division service learning course we were required to log 30 hours of service at a local school in which we taught Japanese and Japanese culture. In class we would create lesson plans and write reflections in Japanese after we visited our site and reflections in English after reading class related articles regarding social justice issues and building a global community. This really helped me become aware of my community and the social injustices issues that surround it.
We chose Walter Colton Middle School as our site of service. Along with meeting the great staff and children, we noticed that majority of the student population of our class was either Hispanic and Caucasian. The environment around the school had many parts and shopping malls so, we thought that the school popular would be filled with a diverse amount of students. However, while we continued to go to our site, my group and I noticed that there was a social injustice to the students that they were only limited to a certain amount of language course available to them. We noticed that many of the students had the willingness to learn another language and learned the material quickly after being taught.
Comparing the start of this class and having completed it I believe that my view of my community and the world has been broaden to think globally. This class really gave me the experience in lesson plan creation, class management, interpretive and presentational Japanese communication. I wish to further the skills that I have learned from this class so I could used them in my future career either abroad or here in the United States.
