Reflective Narrative:
1.1 MLO 1 focuses on being able to communicate effectively in Japanese using three modes of communication: interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational. By JAPN 300, 320S, and 380, these classes all require a high level of proficiency to effectively communicate and share ideas in class. Each class had a different focus in and required different ways to use my Japanese skills. In JAPN 300, this class mainly focused on learning Japanese. If we did not understand something we would have to ask our teacher in Japanese thus, learning new grammar and vocabulary which help strengthen my Japanese language skills.
1.2 In JAPN 320S, this class mainly focused on learning about our community as well as making us thing how can we give back to the people within our community. This class made me aware of the problems of education inequality and social injustice. Thus, we had to present in Japanese what we learned about our community which made us learn new words relating to social justice and inequality. Everyday I always hope to develop my Japanese language proficiency further with what I learned from these listed class and the from the international friends i have made here at CSUMB. However, some of the challenges I find while living here in American is that I myself tend to rely on English even when I get the chance to use my Japanese. Also, I find it hard to maintain a high Japanese proficiency level without having to study Japanese everyday. I believe it is an absolute must that in order to achieve a higher Japanese proficiency one must study everyday and use it.
